Dorado or Brycon? ID check, help needed?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good observation sir.

This guy looks like he's a tiny fella, 2" or so. I took the eyes and odd proportions to be displaying neonate morphology. Have you had any that small?

JoshuaLow JoshuaLow how big is this guy?
Very tiny indeed, he is only about 3.5 inch, getting thicker and almost always hungry!!

This fish looks weird to me..... Something bout the size of the eye maybe? Not sure how many people out there have multiple species of Dorado swimming in the same tank but this guy doesn't look like anything I have at least at the size it's currently at.

To me it looks like a Frankie/Brassie crossed with a Dentex..... lol. The head shape to me looks Bryconish.

Will be a very interesting one to watch grow......
Hope he turns out more dorado-ish!! Hahaha

Dangit Rob..... I need you to dumb down the terminology about 20-30%..... lmao.... When I got "Robert" i think he was like 3-4". IF I remember right he looked similar. The eye thing may just be the pics, seems these fish look different at different angles.... BUT the more I think about it the more I don't wander if the eye looks Hillari - ish? I should dig through old pics, take some new ones and bump up some old threads just to get the jive going.... ha ha ha.

I'd love to hear Wes's input since he's the guy that brought Robert in and seemed to spark the debate of the different species, farm bred VS southern argentina quota'd "Big Headed" Dorado....

The million dollar question - WHERE did the fish in this thread come from? Who imported it? WHERE was it caught?

Neonate morphology refers to the big eyes "cute" shape that young animals have. Big head, small body, large eyes, etc. I suspect that this guy is showing these traits since he's tiny.

I seem to remember Robert having similar traits when young as well.

I'd like to hear Wes' thoughts as well. I suspect that his brassies are probably some of if not the only true brassies non the hobby.

I noticed it seems to eat till its probably full, it's appetite is amazing, and then it starts to knock out shrimps, not to eat but just to shove it around in the tank and after the shrimp is dead for sure, it leaves it for the panther crabs..... Is the dorado practising some form of hunting skills.
It's kinda weird behavior. I will try to catch a video of it

It has started to feed on frozen tiger shrimp........ And jumped out of the tank while feeding, gosh hopefully no injuries!! Gulps.... It is like some crazy rocket when it sees me lowering the shrimp.....
Any advice on feeding or do most of you open only a gap at the lid to feed?
