265 Mixed African Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
New dimensions are 48x30x36 divided by 231=224.41 gallons not including the 2 FX filters, sorry to be a stickler. ?

I have only paid retail one or two times in my life when I first set up a 75G tank with Malawi cichlids. Now I get most of my fish from local fish clubs and auctions as juveniles and grow them up and watch them breed and sell off the juvies at the same places.

I just don't care for the look of lots of fish in a tank as I like to see their natural behavior of interacting and breeding. My solution for lots of fish is lots of tanks. :grinyes:
Yes most of my fish are from local breeders or auctions very few from my lfs.

Nice!

Easy water changes are done water changes, smart call

I have a similar setup for water changes and love it. I am on a well so I don't have to treat the incoming water
Wish we had well water. I just hit the tank with prime and refill. We have naturally high ph due to limestone here in the state so easy for cichlid care.

My African tank is roughly half the size of the OP's tank, stocked with 27 Cichlids & 5 Botia Loaches. It looks pretty full.
I'd need to stock an additional 50? Cichlids to match the OP's stocking density.
I don't have the skills to pull that one off. Lol.
The OP does have a nice setup and quite an array of healthy fish.
curious what kind of filtration you’re using? Adding in UV and FX6 could help you easily add many more fish.

I run 2x AC 110's with a 50% weekly WC.
You are doing a fantastic job managing your set up.
I particularly like your hardscape.

I do bi monthly changes of about 75%. The main FX6 filter gets cleaned both water changes, only clean the 1 with the uv sterilizer in line when water flow is down. I run no filter pads or carbon just stacked with ceramic rings. The rock is Texas holy rock with faux plants. I run 3 air pumps setup beneath the back rocks with 2 additional battery backup pumps in n case of power outage.

you could switch to larger changes bi monthly and get maybe 1 fx5 to replace one of your ac110’s, I swear by the fx series I know they’re expensive but they allow for this large amount of fish. I can add as many as will fit without any worry for equalized distribution of aggression throughout the tank. I also add about 2 cups ocean salt once a month to help with slime coat.

2 water changes per month? Is that the UV doing that? I have an FX6 and two eheims on my 150 and change 75% every three days or so.

Seems like too much water being changed. Why do you change so much so often?
