Oh okayThe largest exodus occurred on MFK when several yrs ago the servers kept going down, in some cases for days at a time. This is most likely the crash that some folks are referring to.
Wait by what do you mean “try hards”???I assume youre referring to the drop off of activity on the forums. Let papa Blakewater read you a story.
Long ago a wonderous website was opened and filled with many wonderous aquarium owners all striving to learn more about the aquatic hobby. The four branches (Cichlids, Bottom Dwellers, Cold water, Other Monster Fish) all lived together in harmony.
Then, everything changed when the try-hards attacked...
Basically, they muddied up the forums with a lot of misinformation and from what I remember, just outright stupidity. Eventually it became too much. MFK began trying to get a lot of the mess bringing down the community out of here due to the fact this site tends to be widely considered the #1 source for a lot of information you cant read out of a textbook. After that a lot of the site traffic and activity went down but the accuracy and quality of information went up.
I think the economy has a bit to do with it as well. Im not sure if its an official reason but a lot of people seemed to fall off during the recession. Big tanks are expensive and, in harsh times, are often one of the first things people will get rid of.
The people who don't know anything of notable value but blurt out wrong information to try and give the effect that they do.Wait by what do you mean “try hards”???
I think many of us (ESPECIALLY younger members, guilty) tend to sputter information that we are not 100% sure of until we get deeper in the learning and understanding of the hobby, which is part of the beauty of the forum: there is space for engagement and correction, ultimately creating development. The people who don't know anything of notable value but blurt out wrong information to try and give the effect that they do.

There are still forum sections I do not well understand, such as cichlids (I have had two over my whole fish career) so rather focus my attention to Ancient fish and more general keeping principles that I have experience with. Not all the members have this experience, this is the place to learn. For reference I was also 14 when I joined this forum.
This was quite a tangent but I want to encourage the younger members to hang around and develop![]()
Ah yes that is not at all helpful for the general forum vibe, I do not remember this too well. As far as I know this has mostly subsided and the forum tends to be more thorough with the information given nowadays.I guess I should elaborate a bit further on what I meant. I didn't mean a group or single person who tried to give out helpful advice to the best of their ability in an area that interests them. Wether it be correct or not. My description was aimed at the people whom I remember from a while back that simply liked to make information up that would misdirect others or go into a discussion well aware they were out of their element and contradict other information that was, infact, correct.
