Oscar advice (first time oscar keeper)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This sounds so odd... I have owned 4 oscars, have one now. Every single one of them ate everything that fell into water, let alone the fish crack that is bloodworms. The only time I had an oscar not actually eat was when he was really sick. If I had an oscar that didn't eat bloodworms I would be extremely worried. How long have you had them in your tank for?

I have seen picky fish before, but none of them refused bloodworms.

Had them in there a week now. I've saw mixed reviews where some people have said they will eat anything and also some people say how they find them to be fussy at times.

Ime there are no 2 Oscars that will act the exact same way. Some are fussy while other can be just total trash compactors. Allot of Oscars are extremely smart and will refuse to eat certain things knowing that their owner will eventually cave and give them what they want. My O's I had would act like they were dieing all the time just so I would give em food/attention. Mine knew better tho then to refuse food because I'm kind of a stubborn person and will feed em only what I see fit for the day, well except the whole duckweed incident... Got about a pound of duckweed one day to make the tank look nicer just to end up with the O's eating it all within 3 days, least to say their poop looked radioactive green for a week afterwards.

Did you change decor and water etc. when you switched from the Malawi to the oscars?
They obviously have very different requirements when it comes to water conditions so if they are swimming around in African type water it wont be good for them.
Sorry if it's an obvious question but it's worth asking.

Yeah changed everything even down to the substrate, fed them this morning on the same Northfin pellets that I tried originally and they went crazy for them lol Hopefully it was just a case of them settling into their new environment.

Great to hear that the Oscars are eating.
