Trying out aquaponic

Not sure what is more effective, but a good option for this would be to build an algae scrubber that way you don't have to have algae in the display tank.

Thanks, already got one from Amazon. On a Facebook group one guy had algae in his tank and was defending it by saying it's good for nitrates, that got me curious. Doesn't seem like it make much difference there but I can't stand it visually, so I always scrub it off.

I'm in the same boat. I like my tanks looking clean. The algae will certainly utilize nutrients in the tank, but to remove nutrients from the tank you would have to remove it from the tank at some point. Just leaving it in there would be just temporarily binding the nutrients until the algae dies and is broken down.
