Fish too big for tank need advice for fish safety

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
PetSmart runs good deals on 125s sometimes, especially Black Friday. A friend got the entire set up for $250. You’ll want to upgrade the filter it comes with tho
Is that deal a normal deal on Black Friday? If so I might just have to get two 125’s

Thanks for the advice I will keep that in mind if that does become an option for me by the way Felix looks very healthy and I appreciate you sharing what you know!

That Mayan is a lovely fish too. I wonder how they'd do with an Oscar? I've never considered them.

I fuss over Felix. I will move him to a larger tank because he will enjoy the room and I will enjoy fewer water changes.
But I also want him to have more tank mates. I think I have some bruisers coming up that will survive life with Felix, but they need to grow a little more.

Also, they are all African hybrids, and Felix is more Amazonian, but they've all been living in the same local water with some amendments.

He will be fine. It's you who will suffer, doing the big weekly water changes. ;)
Keep him clean and he'll be just fine until you can get a new tank for him.

Felix is over 12" now, and he's in a 75g long with a 20g sump. He's going to move up to the 125 soon though.
The way this fish is growing, I expect he will be 15" full grown, in a couple years, and gain 1.5 lbs.

He gets live food frequently, and lots of water changes.

I hear ya on this...I forced myself to be patient and saved up for 7 months for the 225. I knew I was getting an Oscar and didn't feel like the upgrade syndrome. Plus it gave me some flexibility with tank mates. Brick is similar to your Felix, also a red (for those of you who don't know). In the 225 he grew at a 1.5" to 2 "inch a month clip until he got to 10". Then it was 1 inch a month to 11". He stalled a bit at 11" then burst to 12". Now it's a slow and steady creep...he's pushing 13" and is 6 inches tall. He's around 18 months, give or take one. I think he's gonna be a buster too but we'll see.

Hi I have been taking care of a mayan cichlid for almost a year now and it is starting to outgrow my 75 gallon tank. I am wondering what are my options for him to be able to keep growing and live a long life. I am willing to give him away if it is the best option just dont know all the rules on shipping and how much it would cost. Please any info is appreciated thanks in advance for the help!
