Oscar develops what looks like bloat after eating

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not really getting much better. I've not fed him in ~16hrs. Last night I gave him an epsom salt bath, after it was lights out and he was pretty calm. This morning no food (second does of API gen cure, trying to rule out internal parasite).

He's glass surfing this morning. Vent was flush with his body, no protruding some so looks like he's trying to go to the bathroom.
Any other suggestions?
Feed him just peas? I also got algae wafers yesterday.
I can't think of anything else to do except wait to see what happens but I feel like I should be doing something.

Did you observe the little Oscar's poop was it normal, or white and stringy? Most fish infected with parasites will actually refuse to eat. If little Oscar is glass surfing I see that as begging lol which is a good sign. Also fish will be fine if you don't feed them for a day or two. if you decide to feed the Oscar don't feed till it's stomach is looking ballooned. Oscar's are very greedy and agree with what Duane stated in his post.

I work from home and sit ~1ft from the tank for 10hrs I see ALL lol. Usually looks like the pellet or the pea he ate and takes a good 5 minutes to finally fall from him from the time I can see it. When it does its not stringy, oily or loose, not to be graphic but most human fish poo I've seen.

His vent also protrudes quite a bit, this is when I started the peas for constipation. His head is now most of the time gray. My water is good (I'll post results below) but I don't know my KH. My GH when I tested it was 150ish.

Is it worth getting a test kit that tests these things again? (only have the API master test).

PH 7.6-7.8
ammo and trite 0
trate 5ppm

I pretended I was going to feed and he did come to the front of tank so he'd eat (he is now spending most of his time surfing up the filter current in back). Usually though he'd be front and center begging for food.

Yes but after some time after mastering fishkeeping you will be able to know the tell tell signs if something is wrong with your aquarium and won't have to test as much. I use smell, and observe fish behavior. Every species of fish will act different in some way. Btw I've kept fish for years but still learning from some of the best here.

I appreciate the help, I don't feel like I'm completely shooting in the dark. I did a 30% water change, its been a week and thought I should get some of the aquarium salt I put in 2 days ago out again since I'm doing epsom salt baths.

I would not add anymore aquarium salt.

I gave him another epsom salt bath, a few hrs later and now he's begging for food!! YAY!! His vent is still dark, think I can go another 24hrs w/o food? I was going to start after this with either peas or the algae wafers I got.

He's looking so good I'm afraid to feed him lol.

Hello!

Been a while since I posted and wanted to say thank you to those who responded. "Blaze" (hate the name but my son named him and couldn't not agree to it :)) is doing well.

Attached a pic, feeding is an adventure. He's quite food aggressive (bite my finger today jumping out of the water to get it LOL). Hoping as he matures he calms down a bit during feedng time or I'll have to do feeding from a far.
