Thank you! That's what I thought too when I looked it up online. It seems like the vent is also round in shape as opposed to pointed (I read that male genatalia is more pointed)?I'd say female due to the vent being larger then the anus is. Generally if a FH's vent is larger then the anus it's female, if the vent is the same size or smaller then the anus it's male.
Generally but not always. I've seen some males with more rounded point and some female with more of a narrow point. The best way to tell is by the size of the vent. The female needs a larger vent in order to lay her eggs properly, if the vent was too small she'd crush the eggs as she's laying them. The male on the other hand doesn't need a large vent just do to it only needing to spray it's sperm over the eggs which are only a fraction of a fraction of the size the eggs are.Thank you! Darn, I was afraid they'd be too blurry there too. I'll try again. My phone is an older iphone and it really struggles with macro photography. I couldn't get the damn thing to focus lolUmmmm see the black area at the base of the genitalia. That black tip usually means male. The pictures are good but they are very distorted/blurry in the area that matters most. The part of the genitalia closest to the anal fin is a crucial determining factor.
Okay that's honestly what I thought for the longest time. I've had the fish for a couple years and always thought it was a male. But then I saw a friend's FH that looked very similar and was a female so I thought oh shoot I can't just 'eyeball' it. It could be female. That's also why I didn't post a pic of the actual fish first. I didn't want people just looking at it and saying it was one or the other with no reasoning behind it. But now that you've seen the vents I'll show you the actual fish.Much better pics. Honestly, I'm leaning towards male. The tough part is that Flowerhorns, being a hybrid species, can be very misleading when it comes to their gender. So I could be wrong on the gender. Even the black spot on the dorsal fin is no way to know for sure, especially if your flowerhorn has any double flower lines on its body.
