How has the coronavirus affected your personal life?

One of the best things that will come out of the coronavirus is an awareness of our fragility as a species.

We’ve been foolishly thinking about our lives In relation to the fragility of the geosphere.

But human beings are Much more fragile, even though we are (By virtue of technology ) at the top of the food chain. Human extinction event would probably not destroy all of the cockroaches or sea snails. In fact we could all go away and most of the earth would remain as it is now.

Yeah, cockroaches and rats, they'll live through anything. On a more upbeat note, at least social distancing wouldn't be a problem in a human extinction event.

Funniest thing I heard all week is. "if you can smell someone fart in the elevator, that mask isn't doing much."
(Ignoring that the mask will protect others from your coughing...)

Of course a virus is much larger than fart "gas" molecules. It's 1000 times larger at least.

The stinky part of a fart contains a sulfur molecule Plus 11 hydrogens, and 9 carbons (approx) for an atomic weight of about 52. It could be 4x larger in some cases.

BUT, A Corona virus is thousands of times more complex. It needs a much, much larger hole to get thru.

Hello; this link says the covid19 virus is sized around 0.12 microns and contends an N95 mask can filter particles down to 0.10 microns.

Hello; This link says the covid19 is sized from 0.06 to 0.14 microns and the N95 mask only filters down to 0.3 microns.

I only read two results of a quick search so far. The mayo clinic link should have more cred I think. Problem is finding an N95 mask now days. My big questions include concerns about the sort of basic cloth mask we can find or make. My suspicion being a simple cloth mask does not filter as well as the N95 type.
Again any mask is better than nothing so I am not suggesting to ignore a mask.

Hello; Found this article and include the link as it is somewhat positive. The author claims a cloth mask can be effective if it fits properly. She also claims to think the covid19 virus is aerosol and gives a decent account for this.

I have done professional level automotive painting with poisonous enamels and lacquers. To do that you need a mask that really seals to your face or you will quickly pass out and die. Nowadays they put you in a space suit and feed you outside air but all we had was safety glasses and a rubber mask with filters.

Having worn one of those and having worn some of the modern Chinese style masks and modern American style masks, I can tell you that they don’t seal out anything As small as sawdust let alone a virus or a sulfur molecule complex.

The only potential use of the disposable mask is to prevent you from coughing globs of stuff into the air. That’s all it can do.

People who worry about whether 95 nm is smaller than .01 µm are ignoring the real hole in the dam here. They will not prevent you from inhaling sawdust.

My take on the masks is its annoying but it isnt going to do any harm and might actually help things slightly so why not wear one.
To show the mentality of people, yesterday was the first day of mandatory mask wearing in public. Fine for not wearing them is $210.00. The police decided to be lenient and give anyone without a mask a warning and a free mask to wear. Despite this they still issued over 250 fines to people who refused to take and wear the free mask they were giving them. I dont know if this is funny or sad, just the mentality of not putting the free mask on and then throwing it away once the police have left but instead copping a fine is strange to me. Also there is an anti mask protest planned in the city tomorrow apparently, should be interesting to watch on the news tomorrow night.

Do let me know how that anti mask protest goes, I’m curious how your government handles it compared to my government.

I’m not talking politics or opening up the grounds for discussion of politics mods, I’m just wanting to know how it goes.

Apparently its some facebook organised thing. The authorities are trying to get a court ruling to make it officially illegal. This wont stop it going ahead but will give them the power to fine or arrest anyone who attends. I think they may make an example of them as our current corona lockdown isnt being very well respected by the public.

Generally I find this to be true. But the people most at risk also find them the most difficult. They do cut into your breathing somewhat.

Now if you're young with healthy lungs, it's not a real issue. If you're over 60 and have been breathing lots of car exhaust and smoked your whole life, it's a completely different story.

Here's what's really going on.
Half the parents in this country never loved and disciplined their children correctly.
Now they are gone wild, with few skills, low morals, no self discipline.
And an inflated sense of virtue, completely undeserved.

By this twist of the mind, they're too virtuous to wear the mask.
It's an honor to spurn authority and toss them.

Some day there will be a cenotaph to the virtue of the unknown protester.

Mask hanging from one ear....
