I raised a group of five Amphilophus Saggitae in a 6ft 125gal tank. Two were females and three males. The biggest male literally chased his brother out of the tank, this was at only 4in in size. The other male was saved and rehomed.
I kept the biggest male who went on to breed with both females.

So my advice is to really start watching them around the 3.5in size and be ready to separate if needed.
You may have a male and female that may bond and breed but don't count on that either. My male Saggitae killed both of wives and another three 6in females I got to try and breed him again....
And also watch out for sudden attack while cleaning the tank. Casper has to be in a net now as I clean.

I kept a journal of Casper from day 1 till now if want to look thru it here.

I would not keep an adult Amphilophus in anything smaller than a 6ft tank. Casper uses all of his tank. The grow outs can stay in a 4ft tank till 6/8 inch range, then they really start needing the extra swim space.

You see what I talk of here, image the tank he's in being 2 feet shorter, or in other words a third smaller in length.

Wait for Petsmart sales. With rewards I got mine for $472. They have them on sale 4 times a year or so for $499.

I say this cause they come with a lifetime warranty if you use the stand it comes with.
Or could go to Craigslist, Offerup etc for used ones.
I got an acrylic 125, tank and stand for $200. So good finds are out there.

Thats with tank stand canopy filtration gravel lighting heater air pumps literally the whole set up aside from glass tops which are a must for me because of the bichir i keep recently saw a few 125s with stands lids and lighting for 250 each. Used yes but I make sure to test the seals on the tanks before I set them up
