Would These Fish Work in My 55 Gallon Show Tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Have you thought about the amount of platy fry you may end up with? Some will be eaten, but they are constantly pregnant.

If it was my tank, I would do 1 schooling fish, a group of bottom dwellers, and a centerpiece fish. So, maybe 4 gourami's (if they tolerate each other), a school of 6-8 platy or tetras, and 6 or so cory catfish. If you decide to have a pleco, I would only do one of a small species. Even in my 6ft 125, one bristlenose kept the glass spotless.

Most importantly, start small. Get the tank cycled and get used to testing frequently. Then add a group of fish. Test some more and make sure everything's right. Make sure you are able to maintain conditions over a period of time. Once you're good at keeping your water conditions good, then repeat with the next group of fish.

Gourami Swami Gourami Swami , Looks like maybe an Amano Shrimp is easier. How many would you put in? Also, water tests for today:
pH: 7.6
Ammonia NH3/NH4 : completely clear/0ppm
Nitrate (No2-): very dark yellow, most likely 0ppm-5ppm
Nitrite (No3-): 0ppm

I did put your recommended water conditioner. I also put in some API Quick Start. Anything else I am supposed to put in their?

james99 james99 , I am thinking about the babies, and I was thinking that most would be eaten, and I would sell most of the babies. I have a local store that is willing to buy most fry.

I am thinking maybe one Chocolate Whiptail Catfish or a Starlight Bristlenose Pleco. Also, I read about how to introduce fish. I know the procedures. I will start with Corys, then move to Platy’s, then tetras, then bristlenose or Whiptail, then Pearl Gourami’s, then dojo’s. I have already found out that baby fish are sometimes a problem, and I will sell them online or to a local fish store.

I can’t speak for others but those have been very sensitive for me and I wouldn’t recommend them.

You'll need to add ammonia to the tank to cycle it. If you're doing a fishless cycle, this can be done via store bought ammonia (make sure no additives, this method allows you to measure out the ammonia and bring it to a certain ppm) or waiting for food to decompose (can take a while for ammonia to show and is hard to control ammonia levels).

Kelly_Aquatics Kelly_Aquatics , I am currently in Big Bear, witch is not my home. I am on a vacation with my fam for 3 days. Will be back tomorrow or the day after. I will ask them. Any ammonia products that you would recommend?
