What size sump would I need for a 55 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
that sounds good! I think the guy from "foo the flowerhorn" uses one of those. Im sure my dad would be very excited to help me with a project, and it would keep me entertained during the winter! i think ive even seen premade ones sold on amazon

Yes the ones I've seen on Amazon are quite small but perhaps there are others I haven't seen.

My most successful design with this was a 3' planter box i drilled and filled with bio rings and pothos. It worked well but it was rather noisy, needed fine tuning for sure:

Here is another similar example I found on Google where a keeper mounted it on a wall shelf. I think theirs looks better!

If I had it to do over again I would use a sponge pre-filter on the pump inside the tank and drill the bottom of the planter for the drain, perhaps use a durso style standpipe to make the flow more quiet.

it looks like you have a flowerhorn which is what I was planning to stock my tank with!!! Is that the only kind of filtration you have in their?

That tank is no longer set up and the flowerhorn was sold when he got large. They are great fish for a solo setup. But yes that overhead sump was the only filter running for a couple months on that tank. It was very effective, moved about 5x the water and held about 5x the media that an aquaclear 110 HOB does.

I've since moved on to building my own custom tanks and sumps. I have 4 from 120 to 200 gallons now. I'm sure I will tinker with an overhead sump design again someday, but for now the tank building takes up all my hobby time.
