Geophagus Brasiliensis "Laguna De Molle"

They would change it if the fish from that particular locality are distinct enough to merit their own species within the genus Geophagus, alongside brasiliensis and other species.

A decade ago, it was thought there was only a single species in the braziliensus clade , braziliensus, but as DNA analysis has progressed, there was found to be significant enough differences between what were thought to be simply location variants, to be given species status, so a revision seems to be going on in the braziliensus clade.
Below is what was once called G braziliensus "Iporangensis", but now given species status as G iporangensis

Back 10 or so years ago , G braziliensus species Bahia Red was also showing up in the hobby, now given a separate species status.
It usually takes LFSs at least that long to catch up with the scientific revisions.
It has also been suggested by some that the braziliensus clade be given a different genus status outside Geophagus, since they are different enough from what are normally thought of as Geophagus.
