Bichir breeding behavior?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nipping is indicative of breeding behaviour. Give them some spawning mops, F1 fish would be interesting to see :D
Hi, quick question, the male injured the females eye during this nipping behavior, i think she’s going to lose it, I moved her to a hospital tank, do you think I should add any meds? Do you think I’ll be able to put her back or will they need to be separated permanently?

Is the eye cloudy? You can add a little salt or just keep water clean.

This sounds like aggression more then mating behavior to me. The mating behavior I've seen is rubbing and vibrating from the male against the female.

You can tell male from female once the male has fully matured. The males anal fin will be wider and more muscled around the base.

My male gets nippy when he wants the female to spawn.

They look the same to me, but I’m not very experienced with bichirs, one difference is the one getting picked on has a much lighter coloration
