Wood shrimp

Got 2 of these little fellas as I’d never seen them before and the geeza in the shop told me they would filter feed and dig the sand and feed

I’m always up for cleaner water and little bits of missed food removed, so I got 2 of them and wow they are brilliant

they have already shed and they dig my sand all day long, the fish stay away from them.
One of them is really active through the day walking around the tank, the other sits on the edge of my root ( has a massive hole in it, wHen I got it the shop had it labelled as a pleco root - not sure if this is right ).

anyone else got any of these ?

I think they are also classed as bamboo shrimp

I have kept these in the past. They can get pretty big 4"ish. Depending on your tank, tank mates and flow you may have to target feed them once or twice a week. The one that is picking at the gravel is probably hungry. They typically sit in a spot of flow and use their fans to catch small particles out of the water to eat. I used a pipette and some crushed flake food mixed in water to target feed mine once or twice a week to insure they got enough food. Small frozen foods like baby brine shrimp and daphnia work too. They shouldn't be using their fans to root through the substrate it will damage them.

I was told they was filter feeders and wouldn’t need feeding, I have only ever used shrimp as arowana food so actually keeping them is new to me.
I will take on board what you have suggested and try your method

do you know if they would eat blood worm

They may. But as they are filter feeders that is a little big. I've never tried it. Most of our tanks are too "clean" to properly house these correctly. I had mine in a 60g cube planted with tetras. I had drift wood sticking high in the tank and they would sit in the flow of the filter out put fanning the water flow. I fed small foods mostly but the tetra were voracious eaters. The shrimp would catch larger pieces of food but drop them soon after. I learned by feeding larger foods the tetras would work on those while I could target feed the shrimp.....mostly any way.

Thanks for the info, I’m certainly going to pay them more attention. I was told they would sort of feed themselves I haven’t been to bothered but looking like they have a big meal coming there way tonight

I’ve just threw some NTLABS cichlid red 48 there way as they are only 1.2mm granule and they seem to be enjoying this

I also have some prime mini granules which I might try
