I have 4 astyanax bimculatus that are very hard on each other and my cichlids. They nip a lot as they do eat fish scales. The result is torn fins and chasing. They even chase CA cichlids of the same size. I know if I had more, the aggression would be reduced. But finding these or any astyanax species is nearly impossible to find. So I was thinking of adding some common larger species of tetras to spread out this aggression. Think this could work?

I don’t see why it wouldn’t. I keep danios, rainbow fish, and Buenos Aires tetras together in a big school and they all get along - and they aren’t even remotely related. I’ve seen tetras of different species all hanging out together in stores too.
As long as you are looking at big, fast, (somewhat) aggressive guys like Buenos, Congos, Columbian, Mexican (with eyes of course), headstander tetras, etc.
I would say exodons but that would probably be more of a mess to clean up. It would give the astyanax a run for their money though.

Thanks, I may try BA’s because they look similar. Would get at least 10.
Always wondered how any astyanax species would do w/ exos. That would have to be a noncichlid tank.

Yeah. Mine started showing black tips on the fins. The dorsal fins flow over their boby. They look like a rainbow. My biggest one looks like this:

except a bit less glamorous while he's biting the blandest ones tail or divebombing the Delhezi
Thats what I like about BAs. Not much to look at (they do have those slight piranha colors though) but not an ounce of aggression towards other fish.
Congos are whatever the complete opposite is. I’d definitely like a school for a future African river setup - but they are so dang expensive. Almost as much as exodons.
