Most Personable Cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm sorry but being rather dense and uneducated what is LV ?

Yeah it’s just a meme for people when they get their stimulus checks ?

But in all seriousness you could probably do a short body Oscar. I’ve seen some places like predatory fins (online shop) in Florida have them. They’re expensive though and you’ll still likely need a 75 gallon at least for the 18inch tank width. A short body is essentially a deformed fish that has been born stunted, it’s internals are the same so they’re usually pretty fat and will likely die early. You can look into it, some people love SBs and pay a lot of $$$ for them and others think they’re a disgrace to the hobby.

Hello,
I say Convict or Salvini for sure. The HRP's mentioned by Jexnell Jexnell would work also. You cant beat Salvini's in the color department, they are awesome fish. I also like the looks of pink Convicts too.

Its not about the species, it's how you raise it.
If you raise a cichlid from the juvie stage, and don't have other fish in the tank, it will learn to relate to you, and you only if you put in the time, time being a major factor) and become "dog-like".
If you raise it with other fish, it will be moe fish like, maybe ignore you all together, except at feeding time.
Of course if a sentient species fish like oscars have been aquarium bred for a century (as oscars have) much of the instinctual wildness may have been bred out, of course there are no oscars that remain in your size criteria.
I agree. If the fish see you often and at regular times I think they get attached to that. At least that's what happens with my tanks.
My cichla are as personable as my oscars (if not more so) but they don't like being touched. Oscars don't mind being touched too much. I wonder if this is related to their feeding as they like to jump out and catch food (in the wild and at home!) So they are a bit used to encountering things outside the tank.
Of course these personable behaviors are tied to providing food (to a great extent). But my fish are also inquisitive and seem to enjoy watching what is going on outside the tank when their masters are about. Bass during the day and oscars when watching TV at night.

Honestly depending on if you go new world or old world there are so many great options but like one of the other guys said time is key ...I've got over 25 feet of tanks and probably more than 150 fish indoors that's not including what I have outdoors and all my fish dance when they see me and not just at feeding time ...just my opinion

do short bodies really die early? Fancy goldfish were bred as short bodies and they live pretty long, easily over 10 years. Even the more recent blood parrots can get past 10 years

From my experience, Crenicichla regani, would look at me with puppy eyes from his cave and beg for food, but would turn his eyes red/color up and strike at my other fish near his cave lol.

I agree with salvini being awesome have a bad taste in my mouth over convicts they mate almost constantly and make life hellish for anything else in the tank

Lol my 2.5 inch female con mated with a blood parrot and messes with an 8 inch leporinus and almost 4 inch jd. She even keeps the 5-6 inch parrot in line.
Lep is still the dominant fish, but the con pulls all the strings in that tank.
