I say an oddball. I think something like an African Spiny Eel, OR Freshwater Pipefish. What is your budget?

You could do something unique, like a tank full of green spot or figure 8 puffers, or maybe an aquascaped platinum angelfish tank with some Corydoras catfish.

For puffers a solo lurker puffer would be nice, but any tankmates go out the window.
Solo kissing gourami would actually be cool. Large, mean, and personable.

Yup, many are surprised at how large KG get. They seem to think they get no bigger than the typical opaline gourami.

New idea, how about an African butterfly fish, it reminds me of arowana because of how they swim. A rainbow fish tank would be cool to.

That would be great. You can get a small group and do an African riverine biotope with some krib cichlids and smaller bichirs.

Yes they can, in fact, the minimum tank size is 55 gallons

I would say 75 is a good minimum. They probably will stay 8-10 inches in aquariums and 18 inch tank gives enough room to turn. Gouramis aren’t the fastest or most powerful swimmers either.
