Ornate has been like this for about three days. Fish is acting normal and still wanting to eat, I feed every other or every three days. Pellets shrimp and tilapia.

Thanks

May want to put him on a diet for a few days lol.
Did he eat anything he shouldn’t have? Too much? Is he constipated or bloated at all?

Gotta fast it a couple of days. DMD123 DMD123 had a similar prob with his poly. Believed to be a defect. If it’s acting normal and the bulge goes down then try to limit food and time in between feeds.

I think he definitely ate too much. There are 10 Bichirs in there so I add enough pellets to last for five mins or so. I really can’t make sure this one does not eat more then his fair share since he is not alone. I will def not feed for a few days but I hate to do that to the other fish.
For years I have only fed NLS and carnivore, however just recently I have started to use a cheaper food. Ken’s fish, makes his own and these are the premium krill pellets. They are def less expensive but I can get them in the exact size I need, 4-5mm. Any thoughts

This was my old Teugelsi, had a major overeating problem.

Its 'off' mechanism to tell it to stop eating did not work. I watched it regurgitate just so it could eat more. It ate anything and everything before all the other polys. The only solution was to house it separately and put it on a diet. It eventually got back to normal size but could never be housed with other polys because it would always beat them to the food. It ended up solo until I sold it off.

Every Ornate I've kept got bloated and died prematurely so I don't want anymore Ornate's.

okay,
How many are you talking about one or a bunch?
How long did they last?
What were you feeding and how often?
After they got bloated did you cut back on feeding?
Where did you get them?

mine that is bloated is from wet spot and sold as WC. Thanks

I believe it was 3 female's .
One died after about 2 yrs the 2 remaining grew to the 16-17 inch and died about 2 yrs later.
I good friend of mine gave them to me but never asked where he got them from.
I was feeding different brands of pellet and Kens fish brand was one of them.
I really didn't cut back because of the other Bichirs.

Ive never had any of my wild caught poly have overeating issues. Most seem to actually not eat enough and are lean and mean. My Teug that had issues was a captive bred, Ive seen very similar issues in captive bred dels too. With what you are dealing with, I would swear you are dealing with a CB ornate, but Wet Spot said WC?

I also had gravel in the aquarium so that could have been the problem. I don't use anything but sand with my Polypterus now.
