Arowanas and Stingrays questions

Hey! Here are some questions I’ve been wondering since I’ve been keeping them.appreciate the help if you know.

1. How long does it take for a stingray barb to drop out?

2. What is the typical growth rate of marbled motoros? I’ve searched the entire website but no one has a direct answer.

3. As shown in the picture below, I bought it as a marbled motoro stingray. However whenever I see marbled motoros on forums here, it always looks different from mine, with more marbling in it.

4. What is the TYPICAL max size for asian arowanas?

1.Barbs generally only fall out once the new barb is fully developed.
2.Growth rate depends on many variables- water parameters/temp, food type and quantity/feeding frequency. Also no two rays develop at the same rate, even siblings.
3. Your tank base is too dark. If you switch to a light base/substrate the marbling will show.
4. All can exceed 24” in length.

Barbs shed every 3 to 6 months depending on condition, age, etc. They will never not have a barb unless it was torn off the fish.

Growth again depends on a multitude of factors. Is it a mini? Is it M/F. What do you feed, how much, W/C schedule, etc. Sooooo many variables go into a rays growth. Unless you know the exact genetic profile, and bought it from a reputable breeder who can show you, you will likely never know a genetic potential. Your fish is also very young and will develop overtime. It is a good looking ray, but not top of the line. The better quality, the more marbling.

Max size depends on species. 28 to 32 inches would be a reasonable catch all estimate.

Oh. I was questioning myself because it’s been 2 months since I got the ray and I swear it hasn’t even grown 1 inch. I feed it twice a day as well. So it takes longer for the marbling to come out?

So it takes longer for the marbling to come out?

If your tank base is dark the marbling will never reach its potential. Marbles that are kept for long periods of time on dark tank bases/substrates sometimes never develop nice clean marbling even when they are kept on a light base.

Oh. I was questioning myself because it’s been 2 months since I got the ray and I swear it hasn’t even grown 1 inch. I feed it twice a day as well. So it takes longer for the marbling to come out?

I had a male motoro born larger than anything else in his litter last July. He was born at 6.5". He is barely 7" now, yet his brother (same litter, still in the same tank eating the same food, eating the same amount) was born around 5" is now close to 9" Both are active and normal, some just don't grow very fast. Again without knowing the genetics of your fish, its anyone's guess as to why assuming your husbandry is not an issue

They will develop and change as they get older. The pattern and colors will improve as with every ray.
