I just bought this aquarium. I have a OCD and when I travel, it worries me a lot. Should I buy insurance to cover for water damage in case somethign happens? or should I get a camera? insurance is very expensive but a live web cam is cheap. this is a rented apartment and I do not know what would happen if the tank accidentally breaks and 123 liters will spill in the floor. the tank may never break, but just in case if accident happens. or if someone breaks in and breaks the tank :(.

any idea? do you have insurance? do you have a webcam? any help is appreciated.aa.jpg

If you are worried about eventual leaks then I would get a brand new acrylic tank if you are renting an apartment. Chances are better it will not leak since the panes are bonded chemically versus glued together like glass. The expense of an acrylic tank will be offset by not having flood insurance.

Good advice but I would stress a "quality" acrylic tank in this situation. Imo many of the cheaper acrylic manufacturers (seaclear, etc) use very thin, flimsy acrylic that I trust far less than your average glass tank construction. For instance I bought a 36x15x20 seaclear on the cheap, and when I received it found that the walls and bottom were only 1/4" acrylic. I never bothered setting it up, seems like a disaster waiting to happen to me, but it will perhaps find use as a sump at some point.

So, I had an acrylic 125g (actually held 110 USg) from LeeMar (1998) for about 14 years. It was 1/4" all around with front rounded corners. The first 7 years it was level, until I put it in my new house. It was off level by about 1/8" for the next 7 years. It didn't leak on me, but it had more crazing on the left side due to it being off level. I don't know if the acrylic or glue used to fuse the acrylic panels are different nowadays, but my old acrylic never leaked on me. I did see a few places near the last 1" from the top where my hard water had seeped in and formed "hard water crystal flowering" from the inside (halfway in), which I can only assume it had a split.

So in my experience , 1/4" acrylic with 110 US gallons of water didn't leak on me in the 14 years that I had it (eventually resold it).

You should have renter's insurance already which should cover the damage due to any leaking. Exactly what it's called and covers you'd need to talk to your insurance company. It's very unlikely to break or leak though.

Edit: Wait, you're the guy wanting to put the tank on top of the dresser. I take back my unlikely to leak comment if you don't have it on a decent stand.
