Overstocking New World Cichlids???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not new world but here is my mix cichlid tank and it is Heavily stocked. my nitrates are under 20 ppm usually under 10 ppm I have a continuous drip system, well its more like a continuous stream system lol I do anywhere from 8 to 25gph and I have an algae scrubber but I am installing 2 more. I have keep cichlids for over 20 years and this is by far the calmest tank I have ever had. The baby's just swim around and the big fish don't even look at them. They don't lip lock just some chasing and that's it here is a video of the tank

Just remember that that is a very big tank and mostly Africans/the less aggressive (proportionally) CA/SA cichlids.
The meaner guys like amphilophus, parachromis, etc. will turn an overstocked tank into a gladiator match very quickly.

you may get lucky with mellow americans but mean ones like amphs , parachromis, herichthys , would not tolerate such a tank
king and queen cichlids on YouTube tried a community with his amphs but it turned into disaster.

DMD123 DMD123 was able to keep a good amount of amphs together in a 300 for a while, but he had just commented that the dominant one died, and it all fell apart after that.

that's what , it can be done but you never know when they'll get an insect in their head and go.. BANG on one another.
could be that they behave nicely during the daytime and at night may get mean , I've personally seen fish that stay nice when the light is on and as the light goes off they start to fight. my 2" argentea killed all its tankmates in a 20 gallon one by one during the night. its only 2" , god knows how mean he'll get when he grows full size.

But that's the problem is you are saying all fish are the same. Thats like saying pit bulls are bad dogs, no it is the owner that makes them like that. They have evolved to be a better fighting dog so that's why people pick them.
U have 3 oscars 2 if them are fine gets along with other fish, then the other one will kill anything I put in the tank with him. I'm not saying certain fish or not proned to being more aggressive what I am saying is if you really want a certain type of fish you should just get it if you have the tank requirements for it.. no one can tell if the fish you get will be aggressive or not.
I have a Melanochromis auratus and if you read about them they are very aggressive the one I have is teddy bear.

Lucky about the Auratus. Mine was evil (and even then not as bad as others I’ve read of). All about dominance though.
It’s good to look at fish based on average aggression. One jag may do well in a community, and even if I had a jag like that, I would never recommend it to another. Too much risk to the fish.

the one i had was also evil , when 3" it dominated the other mbunas , i took it out and put it with 7-8" tinfoil barbs thinking it will stay ok or would get eaten by the barbs but it dominated them too

Comparing dogs with fish is not worthy imo. u can train a Pitbull to be mild mannered and also a Labrador to be aggressive but you cannot train a dovii to be less aggressive or a goldfish to be super aggressive
