I am wanting an arowana for my 180 gallon aquarium that currently has some monster catfish (rtc, tsn, marbled achara) in it but I will be rehoming them! I have raised plenty of silvers and want something different. I have the option of getting either a 7'' Jardini or a 4-5'' Black Arowana. The Jardini is $265 and the Black is $200-.
I want to have tankmates. During my research, people have been telling me that the likelyhood of having tankmates successfully with a jardini is very small.
The Black Arowana looks cool but not sure how hard they are to keep.
Tankmates I am thinking are: redhook silver dollars, florida gar, red belly pacu (until they get too big), and some sort of catfish and a chocolate cichlid.
Which arowana would you recommend?

Another arowana for if you really want something oddball and different is an African arowana, they’re actually bottom dwellers unlike other arowanas. Not sure of black aro or a jardini but African aro is definitely something to look into if you want something different. ( they’re more closely related to arapaima than arowana and grow about 1 meter or 3.3 feet and a 180g would be more than enough space for one.

The tank you have can be a good home for a jardini for quite some time . I've seen them their entire lives in a 6*2*2 . So if you plan for life then the jardini without any tankmates. They'll tolerate tankmates till about 5-7 inches and then suddenly snap and start killing other fish one night each.
As for the black arowana it's almost similar to a silver aro but itt get to a point where you'll have to rehome it cause it'll outgrow the tank. Tankmates can be put with black aros but then the Rehoming of the arowana will be a bit quicker than without tankmates.
A pacu is not at all good suited for that tank let alone for the arowana. They tend to chew the arowanas tail .

If you ask me NO species of arowana should be in a 6x2x2 tank. Every speices of arowana gets over 24" and species like silver and black aros get over 30" even some african aros can get that big (Although its unlikely it can happen)
Sorry to contradict but I've not seen jardini above 18-20 inches but have seen 40inch silvers and blacks could also reach 36 inches possibly

..puSkar.. ..puSkar.. All good. I agree that the odds of getting it that size is slim but even a 20 inch pretty rigid fish (I mean more rigid then a silver or black aro) is pushing it in a 180 IMO.

For sure, that's what I mentioned that a jardini would fit in 180 for more duration than a silver . And if the fish grows more than 16-17" then that fish for sure needs an upgrade. But the upgrade will be far more faster for a black or a silver than a jardini

Always heard that Africans preferred bottom over top.
They are same as arowanas when it comes to swimming space and type.
It's just that they don't feed as aggressive as other arownas they're like arowana with the mouth of a lungfish, they pretty much eat food like a lungfish.
