Sex my temporalis

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm stumped with mine too, lol. It's about 6" now. Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 could probably help us all but I don't think he's on that regularly.

Ok so yours looks alot like one of my smaller ones around 6 or 7 inches that I think is female... the thing with the chocs is even the females get a slight bump too... so yes I will most likely havto wait a bit longer to tell as they both grow some more... because as with FINWIN FINWIN male my larger male is so ez to tell but the other 2 I have no clue really.. just nothing prominent enough yet

I'm thinking with another inch of size u should be able to tell (@ 8").

And yeah, chocs are s-l-e-e-p-y and s-l-o-w swimmers. Bobo would take like 5 minutes to come up for food. ?

To be honest I have found these fish very hard to sex until around 8 or 9 inches for males and about 6 for females. Even then lone females are hard to tell as it could be a male that hasn't grown enough yet.
When they are mature and side by side males and females are quite easy to tell apart. Males are more elongated have longer more curved dorsal fin and a larger nuchal hump.
You could tell the sex of a mature lone male, but females unless age is known are much harder to predict.
Looking at yours I would hazard a guess at female, due to its shape. However I could be wrong. Not an easy fish to sex.

I don't have pics of my old pair from years ago, but I would guess female as well. Loved my pair, but they didn't fair well in our local water hardness/pH/alkalinity, at least not with large water changes. It peeled the slime coat off of them. Bummer, one of my favorite pairs that I kept over the years.

I was late to the party with mine. It was finwins colour morphing choc that grabbed my attention to this species. I expected a bit of aggro given it was a cichlid but it just doesn't exhibit the usual cichlid traits, as in redecorating, eating plants, bullying tank mates. It's so placid, it's been a great addition to my com tank.

In my tank with this species, a mature female L14 pleco ruled the tank. Even my big male temporalis kept out of striking distance. lol

I share this view, absolutely love mine. I have two pairs and the colour display is intense while they are spawning. Lovely cichlids to keep.

They sure are some stunning cichlids, but like esoxlucius esoxlucius said they're temperament is what I love the most.... I struggled wanting to keep different cichlids together and failed miserably!..
changed my tank around to more of a community with these guys and other peaceful oddballs almost 2 years ago and it's been nothing but heaven since.
Thanks RD. RD. FINWIN FINWIN And Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 for the input

That's great to read, glad that you found some fish that you can relax & enjoy.
