Hi guys,

10 days ago I got a midas cichlid (about 8inch).
He‘s not really eating which can be normal according to some threads I read.
I also read that it takes some time for big fish to settle in. But sometimes he is digging and swimming around and after that he‘s hiding for 1-2 hours, which is a long time in my opinion.
I‘m doing weekly waterchanges > 50% and test the water parameters every day -> they are fine.
Tank size 48 inch x 20 inch x 26 inch.

I can‘t find enough information if its normal that he‘s hiding for so long.
Is that normal behaviour or do I have to be concerned?

Yup normal, considering he's doing other things. Keep the tank light off above the tank. It will let him see further into the room, and get used to the normal traffic in there. Is there generally, no traffic in the room throughout the day?

First of all thanks for your answer, I‘m relieved now ?
The tank is in the living room, but not much traffic. He doesn‘t get disturbed very often. Hope its getting better in a few days/weeks…

You could try some sinking pellets soaked in garlic juice at night, when the light goes off.
