Petenia Splendida

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm wondering if the WetSpotTropicalFish is still the red version. They had it listed Red Bay Snook for many years and no indication that they were ever getting the green form. This past year they have removed the "red" from the common name.

I've only seen the green version available from TangledUpInCichlids.
A few years ago, like 4/5 when it was Jeff still he had some larger sized Snooks in the red form. i sourced them on my second order from him which was almost like an audit of CA cichlid genuses. i wish i had kept the fish but at the time moved torwards more aggresive fish, a move i would reverse in about 18 months. i would love a snook, pearsei community with some smaller CA's maybe nics in the lower stratum

Awesome fish, got tempted with some as a LFS had them. Ended up passing though. They had the reds and green

Looking amazing! What size are they? I have a smaller group of 6 (ranging in size from 6-8.5 inches) that were apparently from 2 red parents but all have remained the ‘green’ variation (which I don’t mind at all)

I have 2 of them. Both about 10 inches. They outgrew the tank so I have them housed in a pool along with other fish. They are my favorite fish.

That sounds like an amazing tank. In Australia I’ve been searching for a long time now for some C. Pearsei, but they have completely disappeared which concerns me.
I’ve never kept the red variant of P. Splendida only the green which I personally prefer

I believe cichlids of the Americans may currently have the green variant available. They have them listed as Petenia Splendida ‘Wild morph’

It will always be the variant you aren’t interested in will be available, then when you aren’t look the variant you originally wanted will pop up

I saw that, but the red and green both occur in the wild :grinno:. I could ask if I was serious enough about buying $100 of fish from them.

In my experience if the fish are listed as ‘wild morph’ they will be green. Generally red is readily advertised. Of course there may be exceptions

It’s very easy to get to $100 when ordering from COTA or TUIC and they only seem to do air cargo so shipping is much cheaper

Very nice snooks! I like both forms, but prefer the green. Is it possible to keep them w/ adult thorichthys or would they end up as a meal?

I originally had the 4 larger Splendida with a group of 6 C. Spilurus, out of the Spilurus only the fully grown male would ever come out. Even though the Splendida couldn’t eat the rest I believe due to their size they are extremely intimidating so I’d worry about a similar situation with Thorichthys.

Possibly if you started with largish Thorichthys and small Splendida. But I feel it’s a matter of time until the Thorichthys become intimidated and hide majority of the time due to the sheer size of the Splendida
