Nano+ Water Sterilizer - My new toy!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've seen these things advertised for a couple years now, I'd wondered if they actually worked. Wonder if there are any potential issues for plants/ fish / inverts? From my understanding it's kinda like a small ozone generator.
Not sure about inverts. But plants and fish are good, it allows plants to grow. Ive noticed that the top water plants has grown 3 times over.

That is the roots from the top water plants you are looking at. But I guess they are eating the roots too!
The black/red stuff all over the roots looks like the cyano I had:

They seem unwilling to explain by what process this device works. I never trust anything that I cannot find the science behind it. They make claims but refuse to say how the thing works. They say it is safe for fish, inverts and bacteria. How can we trust this? How can we verify this?

Here is what I do know. When new things come along in the hobby if they are as good as advertised they get put into use by an increasing number if hobbyists. How many if these devices has anybody seen in use?

I can't even find this dang thing anywhere on the internet. No matter what google terms I try, I get a variety of filters using the term "nano" in their names.

IMHO, it takes some weird combination of intestinal fortitude, naivete and blind faith to plug some poorly-understood gadget in and drop it into your tank. How does it work? What does it actually do? Sorry, but without some detailed explanations of at least the theory behind it...which TwoTankAmin TwoTankAmin has found that the makers don't want to release...I wouldn't touch it.

Not leaving giant fungus-covered piles of uneaten food lying around inside a fishtank would probably be just as productive towards having a healthy tank as using this mysterious "sterilizer". :)

I trust the lfs owner. He has used them before, and uses them on all the show tanks he has. Everything from Frontosa, to Bettas, to Thai Micro Crabs, to a heavily planted tank. I was lucky enough to see the algae-ridden tanks he had. I went back a week later, and most of the algae was fine. Plus, I haven't found any info online, so I thought it would be nice to help people and test out a somewhat new product. And I can say that it is just bubbles. Nothing else. I don't put any powder, nothing in it. It has worked very well so far, and thats what I want to hear. I know it could be bad for the fish, but how would it be bad for the fish - in what way?

Since nobody seems to know exactly what it is...what it is doing...or how its doing it...how can we possibly answer that?

Lots of new ideas and products seemed to have "worked very well so far"...until they became better understood. DDT...thalidomide...tobacco...at one time they were considered completely harmless and beneficial. The list goes on.

Paranoid cynics like me are grateful for trusting Guinea pigs like you! :) Back in medieval times, you would have been one of the king's food tasters...

These things have been around for a long time and used by many planted tank keepers in Asia and all over Europe. I haven’t used it so I can’t say if it works or not but it’s likely using electrolysis to produce o2 and o3. Look up Twinstar Nano….the rest all just clones of this unit
