Researchers have described two new Critically Endangered species of Parosphromenus, a genus of small anabantoids collectively known as licorice gouramis in the aquarium hobby, from Bangka Island and Kalimantan in Indonesia.

I wouldn’t count on captive for a lot of fish (most of your loaches aren’t even)…actually getting them imported is the real trick!

Yeah, pretty much all loaches (with the exception of golden weather loaches) are wild caught, as are many other fish (eg: pictus catfish). But gouramis (dwarf, pearl, blue, fighting fish, etc) are usually captive bred because of how easy it is.

You are right about getting them imported. That's actually what I meant - I would want some to be imported so that they could breed up a good enough population in captivity to supply the aquarium trade without depleting the wild population, but that isn't going to happen anytime soon and possibly ever.

And these fish are endemic to only a few polluted streams and swamps. Both are critically endangered.

It's a shame that every cool new species they find nowadays has to be indigenous to some mud puddle in the middle of bum-f nowhere
