Bahia red not being a big name fish, as part of a Brasilensis group that still needs sorting out, and now with obscure names, I don't think much of the hobby has caught up, but there are 3 recently described species in the Brasiliensis group from Bahia. Some I know who've kept them over the years have suspected more than one fish was being sold as sp. Bahia red. Kind of makes sense, now. Maybe which one you got, or even if they were one of the three new species, depended on when you got them and from which seller or importer.

Very interesting!

I'm really curious to see what happens when biologists finally reorganize Geophagus and Gymnogeophagus. Right now there are multiple groups of species classified together that could very well be split apart.

when the bahi red was in chicago 20+ yrs ago maybe it looked like the second fish in the paper? def not the first or third, maybe the bahia red isn’t any of the 3 new described fish?

Don't know, maybe none of the fish in the paper are what's been called Bahia red, especially if their sizes and photos are really max sizes, otherwise the photos look more like juveniles vs typical Brasiliensis types. That's why I titled the thread generically as "Bahia geos."

I'm not an expert on Bahia red history, and like I say, over the years I've seen the opinion that more than one fish has been sold as Bahia red. I've personally seen different looking fish called Bahia red as well as very similar looking fish named after a collection point instead being called Bahia red. It's a bit confounding-- different fish? mood or individual differences? collection location differences for what is, or turns out to be, the same fish?
