Skunks Under the House

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They're not aggressive, but they are also largely unafraid of people, probably because they know they likely won't be bothered. They're weasels, not rodents, so they aren't gnawers...although virtually any critter might chew through the soft insulation on wiring. They dig, but don't usually cause structural issues...usually. They can totally wreck your lawn digging for grubs. They are one of the most prevalent carriers of rabies.

They don't just spray for the fun of it...but the smell is so clinging and pervasive and persistent that they always stink. Just having one go through your yard in the middle of the night can leave a scent that is still easily detected the next morning. Getting sprayed with one...or having your dog sprayed with one...is absolutely disgusting. Eyes water, choking...it's like a slightly less intense version of mace.

Don't feel left out, Esox...I'm drawing up a petition requesting the Canuckistan gummint to relocate a breeding population of skunks to the UK so you folks can share in the joy of observing these delicate woodland creatures go about their daily lives.

Yes! Pretty easy going creatures. I'm guessing the holes in my lawn are made by the skunks. I also have possums, squirrels, and raccoons that visit. But I know I've seen skunks dig in the yard. Cruising around the internet, it says cat food usually doesn't work in traps. Apparently they loove grubs. Another thing that comes up is using dog pee, or coyote pee. They recognize the scent of a predator and figure out they need to leave. It makes sense. I don't have a dog. Maybe it's why wildlife always seems to get chummy with me here. Anyway I don't think I have got a skunk spray in the house since last night, and I did not hear anything at all last night.

Consider it done!

So, now that we've covered skunks and JW's...are there any other entertaining and irritating species of wildlife you'd like to get in that initial shipment we send over? Ticks? Mosquitos? Porcupines?

Make up a list!

Send me the most irritating foul critters you can lay your hands on, I'll take the lot. But whatever you do, for sweet Mary, Joseph and Jesus's sake........keep The Masked Shadow The Masked Shadow that side of the pond!!

Great. We started discussing this only a few minutes ago...and you are already forcing me to revise my list...

But that's not so bad. The Shadow is one of those golden-haired mindless California surfer-type dudes; my local climate here prevents him from migrating close enough to bother me in person. :)

Sorry to be the bearer of tragic news, but climate change is gathering pace. The shadow might be knocking on your door faster than you think! Lol.

In his defence though, I'd rather have him knocking on my door than bleeding Jehovah's Witnesses!

In West Tenneesse mothballs work for about anything under the house. And yes the mothballs smell like your grandma's house but better than a skunk.

My grandmother had them stuffed underneath the cushions on her furniture.

Fox urine supposedly works as a repellent.

I got some a long time ago, but ended up not needing it. Horrible situation when a skunk cuts loose under the house. That terrible skunk odor is weird. As nasty as it smells, after a while you can't smell it at all. I thought I had got everything under control at my house (as far as removing the odor). I went to work, and people smelled skunk two corridors away from my office.

There's also a easier way which guarantees the skunks will be gone for good
I suppose you are referring to "lead" poisoning
