I always here how Raphael cats are notorious hiders but in my flowerhorn tank I have a spotted Raphael who has a coupon bits of wood srpund the tank to hide under and I noticed a while ago that with the lights on and flowerhorn swimming around that my spotted Raphael is just cruising around the tank. Is this anything to be worried of or am I making a deal out of nothing.

Was this around feeding time? I can always get my Striped Raphael out of hiding with a krill pellet lol.

I don't know how sensitive spotted raphaels are to water quality, but if they are, there may well be a problem. I had read one thread (probably on PlanetCatfish) about how banjo catfish are very sensitive to water quality, and the creator of the thread only saw their banjo catfish swimming around when there was an issue with the water quality. The banjos died in some cases shortly after.
Something like that could be happening here as well. So you may want to check the NH3+NO2+NO3.

I personally wouldn't panic unless the catfish showed signs of not eating or being harassed.
He devours foodies a beast. The flowerhorn at night sometimes does try to dig rocks from under the wood where the catfish is but I’ve never seen any fighting or damage to either one of them

I’ve been back on a daily water change schedule and haven’t done anything different to change water chemistry. I did get another filter yesterday though but I don’t see how that would have anything to do with it

Good to hear. Maybe there's just something that's making the raphael curious enough to investigate.

I personally have 4 species of Catfish that normally hide but sometimes one of them will appear with lights on. When my Banjo Catfish do that I know they are hungry.

Ok I’m gonna do my water change for today and feed them and see how that goes
