Chiquitano Cichlid
Bujurquina oenolaemus

Size: 4”
pH: 6.5-8.0
Tank size: 20G/Pair
Country of origin: Bolivia
Diet: Most live, frozen, and prepared foods of an appropriate size will suffice
Temperament: Peaceful, though slightly territorial
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Bujurquina oenolaemus is a small, little-known cichlid native to Bolivia. They belong to the acara family. They are very elusive, and little information is known on their care. However, they are rather adaptable, and are not awfully hard to maintain in the aquarium. They can be kept with, and are similar in maintenance to, many other similarly-sized South American cichlids.
These guys look amazing!

Striped Redeye Pufferfish
Carinotetraodon salivator

Size: 2”
pH: 5.0-7.5
Tank size: 20G/Individual
Country of origin: Malaysian Borneo
Diet: Live and frozen foods. It is imperative that you provide some sort of hard food
Temperament: Nippy, though can be kept with certain fast-moving fish
Temperature: 70-85° F

Description

Carinotetraodon salivator is an insanely rare dwarf pufferfish native exclusively to certain areas of Borneo which are under Malaysian rule. Though Carinotetraodon irrubesco and Carinotetraodon lorteti, other redeye puffers of the same genus are semi-regularly available, Carinotetraodon salivator can be nearly impossible to get your hands on.

Zipper Kuhli Loach
Pangio cuneovirgata

Size: 1.5”
pH: 5.0-7.5
Tank size: 7.5G/1 small group
Country of origin: From Thailand to Malaysia and Indonesia
Diet: Most live, frozen and dry foods of an appropriate size will suffice
Temperament: Peaceful
Temperature: 70-80° F

Description

Pangio cuneovirgata is among the smallest and rarest of the kuhli loaches. In the wild, these rare fish coexist with several other popular aquarium fish, including the likes of Rasbora, Sphaerichthys, Betta, and even several other Pangio species. This species is sometimes caught, and mistakenly sold under a different name. I found this out through first-hand experience, and for years, got the chance to keep this very rare fish.

I apologize for my absence yesterday. Something personal came up. I will now post two profiles, one meant to be posted yesterday, and one for today.

Snakehead Betta
Betta channoides

Size: 1.5”
pH: 4.5-7.0
Tank size: 5G/Individual
Country of origin: Indonesia
Diet: Most dry, frozen, and live foods small enough will work
Temperament: Aggressive, though could possibly be kept in a community tank under the right circumstances
Temperature: 75-85° F

Description

Betta channoides is a rather small Betta known primarily from Indonesian regions of Borneo. Clear sexual dimorphism, as shown above. (Left: male, right: female) Part of the albimarginata complex. The name channoides derives from the name Channa, the genus containing most snakehead fish. They are not only similar in appearance to snakeheads, but also, like all Betta fish, are related to them.

Blue Whale Catfish
Cetopsis coecutiens

Size: 1’
pH: 6.0-7.5
Tank size: 90G/Individual
Country of origin: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Relatively peaceful among similarly-sized tankmates, though, strangely for its size, is parasitic on larger fish
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Cetopsis coecutiens is a parasitic catfish, which feeds on larger victims by biting chunks out of the flesh of larger fish, similar to the infamous cookiecutter shark, a deep-sea shark species known to latch onto its victims and bite out chunks of flesh. These catfish are very voracious, and can be considerably dangerous in groups.
