Hi, my P. Palmas jumped out of his tank into my water changing bin. This was at 12:30 AM, and I woke up to flipping noises. Two or three minutes after I’m posting on here. The bin is full of things such as hoses, water conditioner, and incited pieces of driftwood. I netted him out, and reintroduced him. He seems fine. Heavy breathing and stuff. He fell around 4 feet, and jumped around a foot in length. I don’t see major damage to anything. His slime coat is fine. Just a single broken finlet. Is there anything I can do as a precaution? He jumped through a 2” square hole in the corner of acrylic sheets due to bowing.

Test water as soon as possible and if it’s an option you could try a small water change to help get him through the night. Most common reason fish jump is from poor water but knowing you that most likely isn’t the case. Could it be possible that he was being picked on by others and jumped as an escape from the others

Could be, he is a new fish in a new tank in new territory.

Agree with this by it being the new fish.. Polypterus are tough so just keep water in pristine condition and bichir should be fine.

Do you think it could be from hunger? He hasn’t eaten when I offered 2 or 3 times for about a week. Could this be a motive? I also don’t know how long he was out, but I probably woke up immediately.

I don’t think it was hunger. If it was starving it probably wouldn’t want to waste energy jumping - and a good sized bichir can go quite some time without food.
