Unpopular Opinions: Loaches

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For me, the species of loaches I keep have a number of advantages over many or most catfish (such as for a bottom dweller):

-More active than most bottom dwelling catfish. Only bottom dwelling catfish I know of that matches them in that regard is the various types of pictus catfish.

-More attractive than most catfish (although this is ultimately 100 percent subjective, it is my view).

-Less aggressive, so more compatible with my favorite peaceful non loaches. Speaking of catfish like red tails, Asian red tails, common plecos, featherfins, black devil, and Asian upside down.

-More complex social hierarchy which is more fun to watch them establish and sort out.

-Safer with smaller fish for their size than many catfish.

Now that is not to say catfish have no appeal, as like I said before I am unabashedly a huge pictus catfish fan. Moreover, since subjectivity means very different opinions all count, there's nothing wrong if one finds what catfish bring to the table more appealing than loaches even with all the above considered.

But still, despite the subjectivity of opinions, I am surprised these factors have not put loaches at the top of more favorite lists.

Catfish really are best divided into 2 categories - the monster types and the harmless ones. Many good sized cats are quite harmless.
There are some nasty loaches out there though.

I realise there are many many loaches out there, each with their own attraction. But for me it's the clown loach all day long. Get a pack of clowns, as in double figures, and their comical shenanigans will keep you entertained for ages.

And catfish? I suppose they are great to look at too, that is when they're not hiding motionless somewhere for days at a time!

There are some cool loaches and a lot of loaches i don't see the appeal of. i like clowns, blue botia and imperial flower loaches... the rest are less interesting to me and dont fit into my preferred stocking setups as those are mostly new world setups.

But it should be of no surprise that a group of fish that is mostly represented as nano fish is unpopular on MONSTER FISH KEEPERS, its a "heres your sign" moment.

to me they are fish mostly kept by newbies who dont really know whats in their tanks at least IME. more for nano or planted setups

Agreed with this completely. Hit the nail on the head.
Only thing I would amend for my part is that although clowns are also number 1 all day for me, I like a full 7 species enough to have them.

CrazyPhishMan, only the very smallest loaches (kuhli, dwarf chain) are 'nano' fish. The rest (clown, yoyo, red tail, weather, tiger, etc) all attain sufficient size to require tanks at least 1.22-1.83m and 243-473 liters in volume (or in other words, enter the realm of monster size tanks). With the royal clown loach of course needing even bigger.
There's nothing wrong with not seeing the appeal of certain loaches, but I wholeheartedly disagree on loaches being unpopular here on the basis of size as a here's your sign moment for the above reasons.

Agree to disagree.

So 1.22-1.83m minimum size tanks are nano tanks? I don't have a problem to agree to disagree, but I would like to clarify if that's actually what you think and if so, why you think so.

(For reference, if it is what you think, that means your 1.83m long 473 liter tanks are nano).

It’s obvious that you have some sort of obsessive compulsion with loaches. But they simply are not monster fish outside of royal clowns, clowns and blue botia.
dojos can be cool especially the ones that Wes sells with the yellow body and black spots.
The others may require stream like conditions and large tanks- but those fish aren’t monsters.
Royal clowns max out around around 18” that’s kind of the min. size for a monster.
