High Fin Mystus Catfish
Mystus bocourti

Size: 9”
pH: 6.0-7.5
Tank size: 75G/Individual
Country of origin: Thailand
Diet: Most live, frozen, and prepared foods of an appropriate size will suffice
Temperament: Predatory, though relatively peaceful
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Mystus bocourti is a very rare bagrid catfish native to Thailand. They are known for their very tall dorsal fins, which could be harmful, due to their large size and sharp tips. Despite this, they are relatively peaceful in the aquarium, and are known to have rather small mouths. However, they are still predatory, and some extra care should be taken.

Zipper Kuhli Loach
Pangio cuneovirgata

Size: 1.5”
pH: 5.0-7.5
Tank size: 7.5G/1 small group
Country of origin: From Thailand to Malaysia and Indonesia
Diet: Most live, frozen and dry foods of an appropriate size will suffice
Temperament: Peaceful
Temperature: 70-80° F

Description

Pangio cuneovirgata is among the smallest and rarest of the kuhli loaches. In the wild, these rare fish coexist with several other popular aquarium fish, including the likes of Rasbora, Sphaerichthys, Betta, and even several other Pangio species. This species is sometimes caught, and mistakenly sold under a different name. I found this out through first-hand experience, and for years, got the chance to keep this very rare fish.

I remember these! Something to keep an eye out for when I set my 2nd loach tank up and go to purchase the striped kuhli loaches.

Torpedo Candiru Catfish
Pareiodon microps

Size: 7”
pH: 6.5-7.0
Tank size: 40G/Individual
Country of origin: Brazil
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Peaceful towards most tankmates, though parasitic on larger ones
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Pareiodon microps is a medium-sized South American catfish belonging to a family perhaps best known for their habit of lodging themselves into… undesirable parts of the male body. That’s right. You may have heard stories about fish of this family performing such actions from television or other media outlets. Aside from that, these fish are fairly peaceful, though may be parasitic towards larger tankmates. Choose all tankmates with care.

Social Betta
Betta falx

Size: 2”
pH: 5.0-7.0
Tank size: 5G/Individual
Country of origin: Indonesia
Diet: Most dry, frozen, and live foods small enough will work
Temperament: Aggressive, though could possibly be kept in a community tank under the right circumstances
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Betta falx is yet another rare Betta found only in Indonesia. Found primarily in Jambi, though occasionally found in more northerly regions such as Utara. They are not as sensitive to pH conditions as many other “wild” Betta species. Clear sexual dimorphism, as shown above. (Left: male, right: female) Part of the picta complex.

Mouth Almighty
Glossamia aprion

Size: 5” [Sometimes larger]
pH: 4.5-8.0
Tank size: 40G/1 small group
Country of origin: Australia, New Guinea
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Predatory, though relatively peaceful
Temperature: 70-85° F

Description

Glossamia aprion is one of the very few completely freshwater members of Apogonidae, the cardinalfish, a family of primarily small, marine fish that are well-known amongst marine reef keepers. Though about 70-85° Fahrenheit is recommended for this species, they may be able to withstand nearly 95°! They can reach nearly eight inches in length, though this is rare. One of the rarest fish in the trade. Shoutout to Friller2009 Friller2009 , who can be credited for much of this information.
My LFS has one right now for $50; worth it to buy?

Tropical Gar
Atractosteus tropicus

Size: 3’
pH: 6.0-8.5
Tank size: 350G/Individual
Country of origin: Mexico, as well as countries throughout Central America
Diet: Live and frozen foods

These hardy, primitive fish are known primarily from Central America, and are closely related to Atractosteus spatula, the alligator gar, which is not only the largest gar in the world, but also one of the largest freshwater fish in general. Like all gars, these fish are known to sometimes breathe air.
