Lookdown
Selene vomer

Size: 1.5’
pH: 8.0-8.5
Tank size: 350G/1 small group
Country of origin: United States, Canada, as well as numerous countries throughout Central and South America
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Predatory, though relatively peaceful
Temperature: 75-80° F
sg: 1.010-1.025

Description

Selene vomer is a fish that you’ve much more likely seen on a fishing hook or in a public aquarium than within a private hobbyist’s collection. These fish, though not impossible to find, are rather underappreciated in the aquarium hobby. This is somewhat justified, however, as this species is very difficult to maintain, and is best regarded as an “experts only” fish. Far more attractive as juveniles. These fish are also rather tall, which is another factor in their behemoth required tank size. Very robust, as well.
