I found 3 dead IT datnoids, 3 blackberry silver dollars and 3 clown loaches. Everyone ate normally at 3:30, 6-8pm I did a water change and at 9pm everything was fine when I went to bed. I still have 2 psittacus (aroud 12”) and a venezuelan pike(14”) in a 72”x30”x25” (LxWxH). All fish were 5-8 years old and I’ve been wanting the go back to geos for a few years so I’m going to monitor things for a few weeks and restock. This is my main concern as I haven’t bought any fish in 5 years so I haven’t been reading up on things and don’t know what new species are available plus I feel like I’ve forgotten what I once knew. The pike a pretty laid back, don’t mess with him and he won’t mess with you. End goal is a colorful and active stocking.

I’ve had red heads, heckelli, jurupari and cupido in the past and would like to try something new.

I like geo argyrosticus but need to learn more about them, tuic has them 3.5-4” but that may be a tad small.

And recommendations for species and quantity?

Im no geo expert, but I do know a bit about Pikes, I would be careful adding something as small as 3.5" with a 14" Ven. Maybe grow them to 5" or so in another tank first.

Thanks for the video. For a 240g wth another 50g of water in the sump do you feel a 1 weekly 70% water change is sufficient for the species found in rapids or should I focus on ones from calmer waters if I don’t want to increase maintenance?

That’s my thinking as well, hopefully they sit at tuic a month or so and grow an inch.

A 240 leaves some decent breathing room, but its not always "just" about space.
Its also about water movement, and oxygen saturation.
Beside my average 1400gph tank to sump pump flow, and an extra powerhead throwing water the length of the 180 gal tank, and the 125 gal heavily planted sump/refugium......
For rheophillic species I try to do water changes of over 100% per week, broken into 30%-40% increments every other day, over the 7 day week.
Might not be crucial for someone else, but that's what works (and has worked) for me, keeping nitrate below 5ppm, and holding aggression down for Central American rheophilles like Tomocichla, Rheophillus, and Chuco,

If I had to guess the true parrots possibly killed or played a role in the death of those fish. Aggressive litte fuc*ers!
My LFS has one in their 6 foot display aquarium. No one wants to purchase it because they see it kicking the crap out of the large oscars and other fish.

To be honest, if I awoke one morning to the sight of nine large dead fish, the absolute last thing I would think of would be which fish I wanted to buy next. I'd want some pretty definitive explanation for what happened and then take steps to correct it and prevent a recurrence.

Nine fish didn't all die of old age on the same night.

Sveni or megasema if you're willing to drop the money but it's worth it
