Well, after almost a month on garnet sand, I can say that I am disappointed. My lapradeis lost most of their patterns.
First picture is in barebottom
Second picture is the day I added garnet and third is today.

Yep, they are blending in, though I think the first pic would be more camoflauged. I raised a del on pool filter sand, and recently transferred to black diamond. The color difference within a few days of adding to black diamond sand. Note: the first pic was when he was little.

I would have thought that their patterns would have gotten even better on red sand. They were not bad on black bottom but that was when I first got them in 2019

Most fish (my experience is with cichlids) true colors will wash out when placed on a very light color substrate, especially if there are no other dark objects, and/or a black background on the tank.
White substrate is highly overrated.

From my experience, light colored garnet doesn't color up bichirs well. You can try adding pink lights to enhance the red on the garnet sand. The color should come back. It would also help a lot if you had a dark background. One of my koloton lap on a fairly light substrate but I use pink light. It's colors look just as good as it would on a darker red garnet.

Here are some more photos of the same fish under some different lighting. And also a photo of the same fish when I had it in white background, white sand.
