I would’ve thought so too…I would have thought that their patterns would have gotten even better on red sand. They were not bad on black bottom but that was when I first got them in 2019

especially firemouthsMost fish (my experience is with cichlids) true colors will wash out when placed on a very light color substrate, especially if there are no other dark objects, and/or a black background on the tank.
White substrate is highly overrated.


Here are some more photos of the same fish under some different lighting. And also a photo of the same fish when I had it in white background, white sand.From my experience, light colored garnet doesn't color up bichirs well. You can try adding pink lights to enhance the red on the garnet sand. The color should come back. It would also help a lot if you had a dark background. One of my koloton lap on a fairly light substrate but I use pink light. It's colors look just as good as it would on a darker red garnet.
