29 gallon wet pet cichlid ideas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A solo mbuna can actually wind up being a pretty cool wet pet, but they do spend all day hiding.
I really like my kribs but they aren’t too interactive - but a colony of them really is a fun display. I can watch mine for hours.
And that caps the African species that I know well lol

Any of the nannacara or laetacara species could work well. Cleithracara would also be okay in there as well. A festivum cichlid with some other community fish would be very pleasing imo.

Thank you for the suggestions. I just did some quick research and I found the nannacara anomala which could definitely be one to consider. Great looking fish. Have you had any experience keeping them? I really enjoy cichlids that have personality, are the nannacara cichlids like that?

I have always wanted to keep anomala but it never lined up for me. Can't speak personally but from what I've seen they can be personable when they're the dominant fish in the tank, downright boisterous when breeding and spawning even. Most of the dwarf cichlids have that degree of personality ime, just dont put them in with convicts or something else that might dominate them.

TUIC has some great SA dwarf cichlids for sale now, particularly the laetacara variants:

What do you mean by personality? A dwarf cichlids will have it's own personality just like a midas will, but that doesn't mean they will act the same. The midas' personality is usually fearless and in your face, "glass banging" etc. Wheras something like the nannocara will definitely not do that, but will have it's own more shy personality which can be fun to observe it it's own right. The closest you will get to an amphilophus in a 29 gallon is probably the convict. Though personally, I would say eventually a big male convict would be cramped in a 29 gallon, after about 4", and a 40 or 55 would be better.
For a 29 gallon, I would probably go with something more like a small tanganyikan setup, with some shell dwellers and altolamprologus compressiceps. Would be enjoyable to watch them interact and live their little lives. The pair of crenicichla idea is good too (opposite water type, which may make your decision easier) A solo cichlid in a 29 gallon may dissapoint you imo, depending on what you are looking for.

Neolamprologus pulcher are fun for that size tank and they form colonies where each subsequant spawn is raised by the previous. Like their cousins they can turn into a brichardi death squad and kill all other species but they are awesome, pretty fish who i kept in 29's and 36 bows which is the same size for all intents and purposes.

the turkana jewels are awesome too!

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I think I’ve boiled it down to 2 options that I would like. It really depends on what I can find when the tank is ready. My first option would be a pair of nannacara anomala. I love the similarities to the electric blue acara, a fish I would love to have in the future. My second option would be a solo female convict or convict relative. I really enjoy the nanoluteus. I would appreciate any feedback on my two options.

Both (nannacara and nanolutae) are a fish I would also like to keep at some point, so no complaints either way. A pair of either nanolutae or nannacara + dithers would make a really nice display.
