Firewood Catfish
Sorubimichthys planiceps

Size: 4’ [Sometimes larger]
pH: 6.5-7.0
Tank size: 800G/Individual
Country of origin: Brazil, Peru, Ecuador
Diet: Live foods, can be weaned onto frozen and even dry
Temperament: Relatively peaceful, though predatory
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Alas, yet another giant South American catfish. Sorubimichthys planiceps is a unique shovelnose catfish notable for its slender shape and large pectoral fins, a trait that unfortunately tends to go away as these fish become adults. Dim lighting is preferred when keeping this fish, as they usually inhabit murky water in the wild.

Bornean Leaffish
Nandus nebulosus

Size: 3.5”
pH: 7.0-7.5
Tank size: 20G/Individual
Country of origin: Thailand to Indonesia
Diet: Live foods, can be weaned onto frozen and even dry
Temperament: Shy and predatory. Peaceful with most similarly-sized tankmates
Temperature: 75-80° F
sg: 1.000-1.005

Description

Nandus nebulosus is an ambush predator known to resemble leaves, allowing them to inconspicuously masquerade themselves amongst the scenery of their environment, and avoid detection by possible prey. This hunting technique is also used by most members of the family Polycentridae, which, likewise to this species, are commonly referred to as leaffish. Considerably rarer than the aforementioned Nandus nandus. Also can grow up to five inches, though this is rare.

Poreless Gudgeon
Oxyeleotris nullipora

Size: 2”
pH: 7.0-8.0
Tank size: 10G/1 small group
Country of origin: Australia, Papua New Guinea
Diet: Live foods, can be weaned onto frozen and even dry
Temperament: Occasionally territorial and slightly predatory
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Oxyeleotris nullipora is a member of the gudgeon family, a family of relatively small, goby-like fish perhaps best known from Tateurndina ocellicauda, the commonly-seen peacock gudgeon. Despite being members of the order Gobiiformes, gudgeons are not true gobies, and are instead close relatives.

Sterlet Sturgeon
Acipenser ruthenus

Size: 3’
pH: 7.0-8.0
Tank size: 1000G/Individual
Country of origin: Austria, Belarus, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Iran, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine
Diet: Most live, frozen, and prepared foods of an appropriate size will suffice
Temperament: May be predatory, though relatively peaceful
Temperature: 50-70° F
sg: 1.000-1.010 [Possibly higher]

Description

Acipenser ruthenus is a coldwater to temperate fish really best suited for pond life. This is one of, if not the smallest sturgeon species in the world. This makes them well-suited to ponds on the smaller side, unlike many other sturgeon species. Yet another of the surprisingly few fish featured that come from Europe. I plan on including more in the future.

Freshwater Frogfish
Antennarius biocellatus

Size: 6”
pH: 7.0-8.0
Tank size: 30G/Individual
Country of origin: Hong Kong, Indonesia, New Guinea, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Taiwan
Diet: Live foods. Can be weaned onto frozen
Temperament: Relatively peaceful, though predatory
Temperature: 75-80° F
sg: 1.000-1.025 [Best off at around 1.010]

Description

Ending this week is one of the fish I’ve most looked forward to covering so far: Antennarius biocellatus. This fish is incredibly unique as it is widely considered to be the only freshwater or brackish member of its order. As you may know, this fish is a frogfish, and frogfish are part of the greater order Lophiiformes, also known as anglerfish, of which most people are only familiar with luminescent, deep-sea species, which are sometimes portrayed in popular media such as “Finding Nemo.” This fish is very special and distinct due to its tolerance of lower salinity. Despite this, it is perhaps better considered brackish.
