Red Actino Halfbeak
Hemirhamphodon phaiosoma

Size: 2.5"
pH: 4.0-6.0
Tank size: 10G/1 small group
Country of origin: Indonesia
Diet: Live and frozen foods-- Some small, dry foods may also work
Temperament: Peaceful, nervous
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Hemirhamphodon phaiosoma is a skittish surface-dweller best kept in groups. Due to the long beak possessed by these fish, it is imperative to try and prevent these fish from ramming into the walls of the tank and breaking it. Not recommended with fish such as puffers, as they are very thin, and could easily be broken in half. These fish are livebearers. Unlike many halfbeaks, these fish do not enter brackish.

Sharpnose Pike Cichlid
Crenicichla acutirostris

Size: 9”
pH: 6.0-7.5
Tank size: 75G/Individual
Country of origin: Brazil
Diet: Most live, frozen, and prepared foods of an appropriate size will suffice
Temperament: Aggressive, may tolerate similarly-sized fish
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Crenicichla acutirostris is a rare and relatively small pike cichlid known only from Brazil. Information on these particular fish is scarce, though they are similar to other pike cichlids in most regards. These fish are rather aggressive among their conspecifics, though can be kept successfully with many similarly-sized and larger fish, including those that it encounters in the wild, such as Pomatotrygon stingrays.

Yellowcheek Carp
Elopichthys bambusa

Size: 3’ [Sometimes larger, though this is rare in captivity]
pH: 7.0-7.5
Tank size: 1500G/1 small group
Country of origin: China, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Russia
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Relatively peaceful, though predatory
Temperature: 70-80° F

Description

Elopichthys bambusa is a super rare predator found in eastern Asia, as well as some European parts of Russia. They are popular fish for food and game where they come from. This is the only described member of its genus, and it is certainly a very interesting fish. Despite being aggressive predators, these fish are generally peaceful towards similarly-sized fish.

Bicuda
Boulengerella cuvieri

Size: 2’ [Sometimes larger, though this is usually just in the wild]
pH: 5.5-7.0
Tank size: 350G/1 small group
Country of origin: Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Venezuela
Diet: Live foods, can be weaned onto frozen and even dry
Temperament: Relatively peaceful, though predatory
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Though not exceptionally rare, Boulengerella cuvieri is still not a fish you come across every day. Among the largest of the pike characins, sometimes reaching about three feet in the wild, this fish is certainly a formidable predator. Easy to confuse with smaller Boulengerella species while in its juvenile stages.

Size: 1”
pH: 6.5-7.0
Tank size: 7.5G/1 small group
Country of origin: Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam

Temperament: Peaceful
Temperature: 75-80° F
sg: 1.000-1.005

Description

Gobiopterus chuno is one of the smallest gobies available for sale in the aquarium trade. They are also notable for their schooling behavior, which is rare in gobies. These fish are generally peaceful towards all tankmates, conspecifics and otherwise. Does well in communities, though special care should be taken, as these fish are incredibly small and could easily be killed or eaten by tankmates, or even your filter if you are not careful. Best kept in nano tanks.
