Is Metronidazole + Furan 2 + Kanaplex a safe treatment for Fahaka Puffers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is what I am doing. It is not random. It is what was recommended after looking at the facts as I have them.
I just cant see it as a tumor.
it came up over night after a snail he tried to eat and for the first time left unfinished with the shell broken and very sharp looking. It was just this lump for 2 weeks till he stopped eating then 2 weeks later his whole mouth is starting to get involved. So a tumor just doesn’t seem to fit.
I originally thought maybe a piece of shell got trapped inside the sore. But I just don’t know for sure. It is my last option to put him under and check to see if there is something inside but once the rest of his mouth started to look weird we went in this direction.
He is dying. I have done so so much reading and site searching and asking people if what they think and nobody knows. I am an incredibly responsible fish keeper. When the 2nd vet turned me down I was in tears. I am it. So I am doing the best I can, with the information available. never would I “throw medication at him” He is more than just a fish.
he is a 15” fahaka puffer who just turned 4 and I love him very much.
thank you for taking the time.

Why are you saying it’s dying? Is the mouth swelling more or is it just not eating?

If you wanna give it some more time to recover, force feed it using a syringe. Also, if you really think it’s an injury, they give it clean water and some antibiotics like Kanaplex to prevent secondary infection

We are not doubting your ability as a fishkeeper. But some of us are pretty knowledgeable and still don't have an answer for you. My Fahaka is almost 12 years old and has eaten crab, crayfish, snails (multiple types) shrimp, mussels and even pellets. Not once has any of the food caused an issue for it's mouth. I only said that I would try every/any medication as a last resort, because it seems like you are at that point. Sorry we don't have a miracle cure/answer for you. Good luck.

I appreciated your previous response, I am about at that point
But I am not looking for miracle cures or answers, I just thought someone, somewhere might have seen something like it, maybe.
I honestly started with just making sure that my research and the LFS guys recommendation of Kanaplex + metro + Furan 2 was safe. There are conflicting answers.
from there it started into a “diagnose your fish before throwing meds at it convo”.
either way, I did do this and while he has perked up a bit, it is no better. If he doesn’t eat it is all for naught.
I appreciated your honest understanding before though, very much.

I have already done a round of Kanaplex. This was the TX recommend to me by my fish guys that they use as a hail mary and my own research found that the 3 combo is a good next step.

I say he is dying because he is starving to death. His mouth is getting worse and I can not figure out how to help him. Nothing I bring him tempts him to eat. Im not sure he even can. Im not even sure he can close his mouth now. He wont bury because his mouth fills with sand.
he has perked up since I started the meds but his mouth looks no better. Its been 5 + weeks since this began and 3.5 weeks since he last ate anything.
Ive had his photo posted everywhere tried vets scoured the internet. I just dont have a diagnosis.

Boboslunch Boboslunch what about clean water and salt as a basic foundation along with vitamin C dosing into the water it cant hurt or conflict with the current recommended meds ( FINWIN FINWIN did this vitamin c methodology when their fish was under the weather and found a fish vet for their blood parrots weird issue ) maybe it was a freak accident and your gut was right about an embedded piece of shell or even stabbed himself while eating sometimes freak accidents do happen while eating. Go with your gut. Ive eaten tortilla chips with no issue and trust me i managed to stab myself with tortilla chip once on roof of my mouth yes bloody mouth ensued…so I do believe your gut could be correct it did something he did at the wrong moment and it caused that. Bacteria is always present in the tank waiting for a cut to happen to invade.

Like Duanes said contact zoos or public aquariums in your area to up the ante of trying to find experts in this that can help you. My area Is lucky to have Shedd aquarium in Chicago. Wishing you the best luck here and we are not doubting your skill whatsoever. Sending your puffer healing vibes his way and keep us updated.

Thank you. I will definitely try that.
unfortunately I live in Central Oregon- the middle of the High Desert. There are no experts in my area. I tried all the vets who see exotics just incase but puffers were too far out of their wheelhouse.

thanks a bunch though. Much appreciated
