Is it safe to keep rams (around 3 inches) with chocolate cichlid or could the chocolate make them expensive food ? I actually did a search on this topic and see others have asked the question but no one has answered. Another way of phrasing the question just how big is a big chocolate cichlid mouth ?

I've never kept either, but I have seen that esoxlucius esoxlucius said his chocolate ate some Odessa barbs (similar size to rams). Doesn't sound like a good mix to me.

Maybe esoxlucius esoxlucius will chime in. The are similar length but i believe the rams are a bit taller and less streamline than the barbs making them appear larger. Still you might be right that the mix won't work.

Adult rams would work- start with small temporalis
Yea the rams would start near adult size and the temporails around 3-4 inches - but rams are a primary and chocolate secondary so if the adult chocolate starts eating them i would have to rehome it.

I was surprised when my choc started eating my Odessas because up until then it had been super laid back and placid. I caught it red-handed one day with an Odessas tail poking out from its mouth. I guess my choc was about 5" at the time and my school of Odessas were about an inch and a half.

Although not cavernous like some cichlids they do have quite a big mouth. Mine made short work of large worms and chunky inch and a half crickets......and my Odessa barbs, lol.

Will your rams be safe long term? I'd love to say yes but in reality they may only be safe short term, and then as your choc grows you may need to start counting your rams on a daily basis!

On a daily basis what do you feed your chocolate; what size tank; what size fish and what tank mates ? Just curious. The tank i'm planning will be 10ftx3ftx22inches (l,w,h)

She is currently about 7" and is in a 120g with a 5" red shoulder sev and a couple of algae eaters.

She's easy to feed, not fussy at all, and always hungry! She'll eat floating/sinking pellets, algae wafers and flakes but her favourite by far are worms and crickets, though she doesn't get crickets as much now since i got rid of my cricket farm.

Due to the size of your tank your choc might not even notice your rams!
