I have a 6' silver arowana in a 55 gallon. I plan on upgrading him soon, but it's impossible to find a tank that he'll be comfortable in without breaking the bank.

I found this on amazon. Would this work for him?

If it does work for him, I have two questions if you wouldn't mind answering.

1. Aquascaping

I'm a huge fan of aquascaping, I see a lot of arowana owners have their aro in a single, large tank / pond that has nothing in it but a filter and airstone, Is it possible I could layer the bottom with sand substrate without bothering him? I've heard arowana aren't good with plants, why is that? Is it true? What plants can I throw in there?

2. Tank/pond mates.

I have my aro with 2 blood parrot cichlids and 2 black ghost knife fish, what are some tank mates that would do good for him in the 900 gallon pond?

Depends on the temperament of the arowana, some destroy plants others don’t.

stingrays

Aros get big and so need big tanks.

Big tanks ain't cheap.

Being the pond is made out of some sort of tarp, wouldn't their barb puncture it? I was thinking bichirs

That’s true, depends on the thickness of the tarp. Didn’t think of that. Bichirs won’t look good in a pond top view.

you can try catfishes or gars, look good from above

The cool thing about this pond/tarp, is it has viewing glass on the side! Do you think the pond would be a good permanent home for my silver arowana? Could I put 2 in there?

I suggest checking the reviews first prior to purchasing also didn't notice a lid. Possibly if they got along.

Ive seen people use DIY lids to prevent jumping or excessive evaporation for their indoor ponds
