What to feed small 2 inch long South American Lungfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you, last night it ate the crushed up massivore pellet I gave it as it wasn't there in the morning but the crushed up algae wafer I also added was. I also saw that it left waste in the box. I take this as a good sign since he seems much more calm now compared to when I put it in. I have seen people say you should mix massivore and algae wafers but idk if I should do that now or just wait until its larger.
Great update.

The Lost Tapes The Lost Tapes Excellent news… i have read vegetable matter aids in digestion but personally ive raised 2 lungs over 30” on pellets alone aside from the occasional tank mate they eat ?. The wafers can’t hurt to try tho. Id keep em on the massivore for a bit then switch to the hikari sinking gold its alot cheaper… happy he “bit” for ya, never had one refuse pellets ??

Eh, I buy massivore already for the Bichirs and large catfish I have. I keep so its not like 1 pellet is much, and from my experiance, it makes fish grow faster due to the better nutrition it has compared to most other pellets, plus almost every fish I fed it to loves it. I wanna have the little guy grow quickly so he doesn't have to be in the box for too long. He tries to swim through the plastic netting, I would assume it causes him stress. I wanted to ask that if you think putting in Molly fry into the box would work, as in the Lungfish not hunting them down. The fry are bigger than its mouth so I would assume that he can't eat them?

It won't eat the fry at 2" long. Heck my SAL wouldn't eat bichirs smaller than its mouth. Although, the SAL would accidentally inhale parts of the bichir or bichir's head while it was trying to eat. The bichir would either end up with a crushed head or lose tail parts when this happens. The mouth will open much larger than you think.

IME, south americans wont eat other fish, the mollys may help “clean up” a bit. Just keep an eye on anything picking on its arms/legs.

I take it that means they aren't very good hunters or just don't care.

I doubt the SAL would attack the mollys its more that mollys are surprisingly aggressive for a fish thats sold as "peaceful" considering ive seen 1/4 -1/2 inch long fry attack newborn fry. Idk if the SAL can defend itself from them.

Most all lungs are “silent killers”… more so the africans tho. Will co hab with fish for yrs then chomp em one day. Its a fine line for tank mates picking on them (eating arms and legs) and them eating/harming tank mates. Id prob leave urs solo in the basket till its larger

Yeah, I mean mollys don't matter too much to me since they breed like rabbits. But my personal worries are if the lungfish would be able to be with the bichirs I have, and the pleco I have there too.

i wouldnt worry for many years yet.. S/A lungs are the most “community friendly” IMO also.

Pretty much SALs are best. Unless your willing to throw out ridiculous amounts of money for the Australian Lungfish, supposedly those are the best for communities, although I take that claim with a great deal of skepticism since most of them are kept at zoos and such where they have massive tanks.
