They are harmless for the most part,I'm not sure if they would chew on the posts of your deck though

I actually like them but their digging under concrete slabs are a problem.
We have a high water table in my area, which makes groundhogs scarce. We occasionally see one in the pasture, but recently had one try take up residence under the newly-poured slab for our steel building. The amount of soil that critter managed to excavate within 24 hours was staggering!
He only got 24 hours because that was how long I was willing to try to scare, lure, convince and/or beg him to move on. When I went out the next day and saw the huge pile of dirt that was supposed to be under the slab...the groundhog met with an unfortunate industrial accident 15 minutes later. Shoulda been wearing his PPE...
I also entered similar negotiations with a red squirrel who was observed stealing and then eating the nestlings from a robin's nest in a backyard tree. They aren't just cute cuddly vegetarians...

The squirrels you southerners are accustomed to seeing are Grey Squirrels, including the common black variety. You might also have the slightly larger Fox Squirrels. Up here, we have some Greys in both colour varieties (grey and black), but we also have the much smaller Red Squirrels; they're about halfway between a Grey Squirrel and a Chipmunk in sizes. The further north you go, the fewer are Greys and the more are Reds.
But they are all very capable of predating on birds, frogs, etc.
