The dark patch at the base of the tail does resemble that of juvenile phoenix barbs.

Can someone help me identify if my fish is a phoenix barb or is it another type of barb

Could be mood dependent. In the photos on the first page the darker splotch is not seen well or at all.

yeah it does not have that dark splotch on mine but it does have those dark black fins on the edges
