This is a design i have in mind for a reactor for a large reactor for a custom aquarium 550 tank with their sump:
I will use a Pentair Pentek 150560 or Pentek 20" Big Blue Water (the first is clear but the blue is more robust plastic; but then you can't see the bubbles inside):

The flow is water will flow into the sock tub; there is an extra unused sock hole where a pump can sit and pump water into the reactor; the reactor outflow will then flow directly into the baffle tub (which is where the return pump sit); this allows allow the return pumps to pick up co2 water and deliver it into aquarium. For this aquarium there are actually two return tubs and i can Y the return tube from the reactor into both of them.

(sock tub)
(return tub)

I hope this description is clear - also since the reactor is not directly in the return path it doesn't need a by pass so the reactor connection is outflow from pump (3/4 inch) -> T (where co2 is added) -> into reactor -> tube in reactor takes water to the bottom -> output from reactor -> tube -> Y -> two return tubs
-
I'm not sure if having this is enough to diffuse the co2 or if i will need to put something at the bottom of the reactor to encourage diffusion; not sure if i should go with blue or clear thingy; not sure if i will waste a lot of co2 sending the co2 water into the return tub to be return to the tank. Not sure if this will be a very good design.

Why not use an injector in the return tube?
Not sure how an injector compares to a reactor in efficiency; the issue with connecting something to the return tube is that i have 4 returns and i'm concern about the co2 being distributed across the full 10 ft width.

Take a look at the Gulfstream CO2 reactor.
It's smaller but very efficient and will completely dissolve the CO2 before the water enters the tank.
Should be good to place on any outlet to the tank.

Or a SeaFlore one?

Sera Flore Active CO2 Reactor 500 - Small 66-160 Gal : Amazon.ca: Pet Supplies

The baffles are a neat idea but would take up a lot of space and since the top is open to the air, I would think some CO2 would be lost.
With a closed reactor, it only interacts with the tank water.

I may pick one up for my tank!

On amazon the gulfstream has horrible reviews - cheap construction -> leaks. For the 2nd one my tank is 500 gallons. I think i will build my own. We shall see how it goes. Cost to build is approx $75 for 20 inch water filter ($55) plus lots of nuts and bolts.
