True Tank Size For Oscar Cichlid.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've always loved Oscars. Here's what I think:

In my 180gal tank - 72" x 24" x 24"

I started off around 9 months ago with:
six 2" Oscars
four 3" Texas Cichlids
two 3" Bala Sharks
sixteen 2" Silver Dollars
nine 4" Red Rainbowfish.

Currently, after removing fish recently to deal with overcrowding, today I have:
two 9" Oscars
six 5" Silver Dollars.
(I just removed the last Texas Cichlid last week)

Ultimately (in a few more months) I will have just one Oscar and five Silver Dollars in the tank, which I'm comfortable with. IMO it would be cramped with more fish than that, not to mention the bioload.

Hope this helps.

I saw you like salvini cichlids. Any advise for my new pair of salvinis?

I don't like pairing up Salvini cichlids so I won't have much help with Salvini pairs. However, I've heard that once they pair up, their aggression peaks to another level, to the detriment of their tank mates.

The funny thing about my Salvini cichlid however is that she's actually pretty chill.

How do you sex them? Mine are only 2”. So is it possible?

Females are usually more colorful interestingly. Females have more red on them, especially on their bellies. Males are more yellow/bluish and have less red coloration. Then again, substrate also impacts coloration so my sexing is not 100%. My female Salvini at the fish store looked distinctively female as she had lots of red on her, but when I put her into my white substrate tank, her red color faded and she became whitish-yellow colored.

Of course for a more fool-proof method, you can just vent them.

There’s several color morphs by collection point. There’s a population that’s very nice where both m and f are red
