First off, I understand that a Sanchezi piranha shouldn't live its whole life in a 20 gallon. But I do know that a 3-inch fish can stay in a 20gal for a while. I'm getting a sanchezi at 3 inches and I'm wondering how long I can keep it in a 20 until I need an upgrade and should that upgrade be a minimum of 29 gallons?

I wouldn’t keep one in a 20 for more than a few months. Serras are slower growing than pygos, but still grow at a decent rate.
Long term I would get a 40B at the bare minimum - a 4 foot tank like a 60B (same dimensions as a 75 but with less height) would be ideal.

Many members of other piranha sites say that 29 gallons is the minimum. What do you think?

It’s doable for a small one, but after 6+ inches I would give it more space.
The nice thing about the breeder is that is sacrifices height for width, which most fish will appreciate.

So you're saying 29 gallons is good up till 6"?

Stocking questions are all the same. Just use your descretion. If the animal seems to be living a healthy life its fine. You can look and tell if your pets environment is too small.

6 is a good benchmark, but the fish will typically tell you when it wants more space. If it were me, I would just start with the bigger tank (40B) so you don’t have to worry about future upgrades.

in the past one could get a 40g breeder on sale at petco for cheap,

29g vs 40g - just get the right tank vs upgrading a 20g, 29g, or 40g

GL!
